catching up with Jont: Dumbarton Unlit
It was a long drive the next day after the Bettyhill gig. West to Tongue and then south - on the most beautiful road I have ever been down in my life - as we headed back across Sutherland to Bonar Bridge.
There were hawks hanging in the air, or hovering waiting for the kill, hills and valleys stretching out all around us. I had an intimate photo with one of the locals...
... and after traveling hundreds of miles we eventually reached Ali and Sophie's place near Dumbarton for the week's only official Unlit gig.
Here I am with the lovely pair.
There were a bunch of people already there - all incredibly friendly - a drum kit, keyboard and amp all set up in the front room and even a veggie lasagne in the oven. Peeking through into one of the other rooms I saw just how much effort they had made to get ready: the side room was packed completely full of their belongings, which they had moved to make space for the arrival of a whole swathe of the local Scottish Americana folk scene.
Once again, as with Norwich, the enthusiasm of the host meant that we had eight bands playing instead of the normal three or four. But that was alright, especially when they were this good and I've to say it... this nice! Really, it's been incredible the people we've met on this trip, all so excited about being part of an Unlit and already up to the same sort of thing anyway. Ali had been meaning to put on something like this in his place for a while and the Unlit tour had just catalysed it, while Stu - the lead singer of the hilarious Rodent Emporium - was totally aware of the value of this sort of party with substance and was already putting nights on like this.
Wooden Box were my favourite band of the night. They were dressed as hillbillies with facial hair that would make Captain Birdseye envious! They played a banging acoustic set with lop pedal and three part harmonies, bass, drums and guitar... and all without using a mic for the vocal (which is generally one of the main features of an Unlit). You could totally see how they would tear apart a place when they were properly plugged in, but as it was they rocked Ali's front room!
When the music finally finished at around 12.30am (definitely the last time we have so many acts!) Dave and Garfield were knackered. Dave even lay down on the floor! A little bit later I played piano to some guys who were left, but then it was time for Ali to call me a cab... I had a plane to catch to France and a wedding to attend...
