was this a dream?
What an incredible place Beth and Mark live in! A huge courtyard, all the different barns filled with stuff... one a workshop, another a rehearsal space, a beautiful long kitchen living room area, a couple of kids making wooden toys, 10 or so friends of theirs sitting round talking.
I meet Andy, the guy who saw the promo film for the tour on the Orange website. He watched the Unlit films on my site that Dave and I had made in the US (and earlier this year in the UK) and had got in touch with Mark and suggested they offer their house for an Unlit. He writes children's books, a really successful one called Alby.
Then there’s the guy who is the expert on all Bob Marley documentaries and little Timo, Beth’s son, who has a glint in his eye at all times and an incredibly poetic and surreal way with words.
After we have settled in, we head outside to the wooden hot tub, heated by a wood burner in the middle, and circled by steam and the gleam of blue fairy lights. I sit and play to the assembled bathers while others sit around the courtyard. What a perfect setting for a gig and so nice just to play, and drink, and smoke, and play some more. Someone skips out and grabs a towel, another jumps in, the night unravels like a whisp of smoke.
At some stage I find myself in the hot tub, next to a beautiful Egyptian woman, a glass of rose in one hand, a cigarette in the other, the sound of laughter and the moon above us clear and bright... or was I dreaming? Nope.
After a communal bowl of porridge in the morning, mark hands me my wet boxer shorts in a plastic bag... proof that I made it into the tub. We laugh and hug, and I thank him and Beth so much for an amazing evening.
hopefully mark will come and DJ somewhere later in the tour and, being careful to maintain momentum going up the hill, our wheels grip and we are off.
